Kate Update - November 24 & 25 Friday/Saturday

Friends of Katie,

Katie is full of emotion and gratitude for all of the support you have shown to her.  She gets a bit weepy as she continues to get in touch with all that has happened these past 15 days.  She wanted to make sure that all of you know how very much she appreciates your thoughts and prayers.   The picture above is the view out of Kate's room.  It is a great view over Elliot Bay, downtown and the Port.

The big news is that Katie has finally had her feeding tube pulled out of her nose.   Saturday morning, after having pulled it out for the fourth time, all unsanctioned by the medical team, they decided she didn't need to have it put back in.  She is relieved beyond words!!   The tricky thing now will be the monitoring of her liquids and nutrient intake and the balancing of her blood sugars.

She had a couple of very good days since Thanksgiving.   She is up and walking,  taking slow laps around the acute care unit on 3 - West.  On Saturday morning she passed her swallowing test and is now cleared for eating and drinking things orally.   Yahoo!

Over the coming few days  we should get some clarify related to her physical and cognitive rehab therapy.  The medical staff continues to say she is progressing very quickly and we are hoping that she will be placed into the Inpatient program at Harborview.  We think this will provide the most rigorous regiment and best long term results.

Katie is back to being very verbal and up to her old self trying to cut deals with every visitor to get her things to eat and drink that are not on the approved list as well as trying to escape the hospital.  If you come to visit..... don't be swayed by her conniving ways.

She is a little "foggy" regarding remembering  certain things over the last 6-12 months.  This is very typical for a person with the type of injury Kate has experienced.   She very clearly recognizes people and pictures of people, but is still a bit fuzzy on some the details or contexts around certain events.

Your continued prayers for Katie are coveted as she enters this important next season of her recovery.  We are deeply grateful for how Katie has responded so far.  These past three days have been very encouraging and we are all very thankful.
