Kate Update - Thursday 11/16/17

Friends of Kate,

As Thursday evening wanes it is with great joy that we report that today has been proven to be a wonderful day for Katie.  We ended yesterday’s update with two specific needs we believe required prayers and other mysterious forms of petition on her behalf.  It is here that Katie would want me to test your memory and see if you even remember what they were…….   Waiting…….   Your correct.  The first need was that Katie’s left arm and leg would start to be more responsive.    The second was that her bowels would start to wake up.
First, to report on Katie’s left side, she met with a Physical Therapist who she really seemed to respond to.   She positioned Katie’s helmet on and got her to sit up and yes do a “dangle”.  Then she asked her to raise her left arm as high as she could which resulted in her going over her head.   She then asked her to kick her legs out starting with her right foot and it went right up and straight out.   Kate turned her attention to her left leg and after 2 or three attempts ended up getting her leg lifted up and just about straight.  All present in the room were giving high fives and deeply gratified.
The next step was to get Katie to stand up. With some help from her friends, she stood up and was able to stand.  Then we witnessed, for the very first time, the steps of what will soon be the famous “dangle dance”.  The therapist then asked her to take two baby steps to the right.  So…. if we are able to give our girl a little leeway we can say that today she ended up taking her first “short walk” on her road to recovery.   Katie has a tattoo on her right arm that reads Solvitur Ambulando, which is Latin for “Solve by Walking”.  If you know Katie, you know that when faced with challenges, she walks.  It seems appropriate, as she now faces this vexing event in her life she would begin by walking.   Cheers to Kate!
Now, on to number two!  Get it…  We were concerned that Katie’s bowels were not waking up and it was causing some concerns and delays in getting out of the ICU and initiating next steps in her recovery. The good news was that after developing a plan with the nursing staff, when and if Katie senses that she had to go she would get up and sit on the commode and try to do the big job!   Well, she did indeed!
There is now absolutely no doubt about what can happen when hundreds of people together pray that one person poop!  Amen!

All in all a day filled with a whole lot of hope.  Thank you for being intentionally and profoundly involved in Katie’s life and continued recovery.  We thank God for each and every one of you on Team Katie!

  2. AS we all continue to cheer on Katie and watch her daily progress on this blog I wanted to take this time to thank Callie and Zac for doing an amazing job with the daily updates. I can’t image how I would deal with this if it were my sister or brother. I would wish that I would handle it with the same grace and courage that you have. So from my heart thank you..
