Katte Update - Friday November 17, 2017 - 11:20 pm

Friends of Kate,

Today was dramatically different from yesterday.   After a day filled with big milestones, Friday proved to be a day filled with frustration and confusion.   At one-point Katie was asked if she was experiencing any pain she said yes.  When asked what she needed, she simply said, “I need my freedom”.   She is thirsty, tired of lying in bed, hot with fever.  She is ready to go!  It was just a frustrating day for her….. Our prayer is for patience during this long fight.   Patience for Katie and patience for all of us.

The medical staff has been doing a balancing act between pain management, high fever, potential infection, elevated heart rate, low oxygen levels and continued issues in her gut.  Most of the above, we are learning is very normal for patients with head injuries.  We have heard it throughout our time here…..three steps forward, two steps back.  It is an up and down journey and today was one of those downer days.

An emerging issue is that the docs are treating Katie as if she has pneumonia.  They took some X-rays of her chest and saw some low levels of fluid and are proactively treating it.  The nurses have been very busy with multiple activities at her bedside throughout the day.  We are deeply grateful for the nurses, Stephanie, Bernadette, Stephanie II, Katherine, Liz, Emily, and the list goes on, for their amazing service to Katie during their 12-hour shifts.  They are amazing people who facilitate great work while always remaining positive.

On a side note, we were able to retrieve the things out of Katie’s Honda Civic at the impound lot before it gets mashed up and turned into whatever mashed up cars get turned into.   To see the inside of the car and all the broken glass and bent metal gave us a deeper and more profound perspective on the incident.  We are so very thankful for the grace that was extended to Katie as she escaped the incident without more devastating injuries.

Many of the notes that have come to Katie in the form of cards or across screens have spoken to a common theme of Katie being “a fighter”.  Like any fighter, it is important for them to have their fans cheering them on.  Keep on cheering for Kate!   She hears the loud screams of encouragement and the quiet urgings of our hearts, whether from the ringside seats or from far away.

We are grateful that she has so very many people in her community, squarely in her corner for this important fight!
