Kate Update - Sunday afternoon 6:00 pm 12/10/17

Friends of Kate,

After a long and difficult past 3 days, Kate went into surgery this morning at approximately 10:30 am.  Her surgeon was the chief surgeon of the neurosurgery team that serves both Harborview and UW Medical Center.  By 11:50 he came to our waiting room and shared that the procedure went very well and they were able to clean out the infection and thoroughly flush the entire area around the brain.

By 1:00 pm she was in the recovery room and had begun waking up and was able to see her family.    It wasn't until approximately 4:00 pm that her care team had stabilized her pain which allowed her to be able to rest.

After surgery, the doctors said that the fluid that was building up in her head, looked very clear which is good news.   They are running labs on the fluid and will now zero in on the infection and begin targeting it with specific antibiotics.    The medical team will also be monitoring to see if her fluid will be able to naturally assimilate into her body or again begin to build up in her cranial area.   If there is swelling in her head, they will put a temporary drain in her lumbar area (spine) area that they trust will allow her natural filtering and draining process to be flushed and again functional.

Kate will be under the neuro team's care for the next couple of days at least and then evaluate status regarding going back to rehab.   For the next couple of days, it will be important for her to rest and be quiet.   We are asking that you hold off on visiting Katie until Wednesday when she will be much more able to visit with you.

Katie is frustrated and wants "all of this" (pain, tubes, wires, beeps, blood pressure checks, needles, blood draws, blood sugar tests, IV lines, bed alarms......) to end.   She is tired and frustrated!  We ask each one of you to invite peace and patience,  relaxation and rest for Katie over the next 48 hours.

She is grateful beyond words for each of you!

I know you are very strong, everything will work out in the end, just takes a little time, I am growing out my hair on my head to the fullest it will be a blank canvas so then you can work your magic and give me a brand new look for the new year ahead. I will see you soon, Love you Kate. Just keep on smiling and your chin up high :)

  2. My sweet Katie girl,
You’ve been in my prayers for weeks now, and oh my heart aches for you. Been rooting for you from the sidelines. Keep up that courage, dear heart. I love that quote because it’s straight from Jesus to us. Courage that can only come from him and he gives it freely because we are dear to his heart. My prayers for you have been that you would have no lasting effects from this journey except for deepened gratitude.
    Love you so,
    Amy M
