Kate Update - Weekend Update 12/1 - 12/3

Team Kate,

Sorry for the delay in getting an update out to you all!   If you know Katie well you know she loves unique and funky socks.   This photo shows a pair of "milk carton and cookies" socks that Kate recently received.  She loves them!   She has gotten Wonder Women socks, Captain America socks, donut slippers and lots of fun, soft, warm things.  She has continually expressed just how incredibly grateful she is for all the support she continues to feel.... She wanted to make sure I wrote a huge THANK YOU.

After three full days of week-day therapy routine, she got a bit of a lighter load on Saturday with only 4 hours of therapy sessions.  Katie graciously hosted her mom and dad's 34th anniversary in her room (with a little help from sister Callie)  It was a small crowd, but a meaningful time of celebrating with Kate.

Sunday was Kates first day off from all the sessions but she did do 10 laps around her unit on the 8th floor.   She continues to get stronger and stronger each and every day.

Her sessions are broken into two basic sections.  The first section is therapy, which includes physical therapy (pt), occupational therapy (ot) and speech therapy which is most cognitive/memory.   The second section is just physical exercise and endurance, located at a little gym on her floor.

It has been fascinating to see how the team all works in unison to develop a comprehensive plan that Katie can implement and holistically benefit from.  She is working on word puzzles, which are like story problems without the math.   There are lots of exercises to help her with associations, using word clues etc. All of the results continue to be encouraging.

Kate cranks up for her first full week of rehab tomorrow morning.   We are praying for strength, both emotionally and physically as she takes the next step.   I believed we shared about one of Kate's tatoos a few days ago, but another tat that she proudly displays simple reads;  "still indomitable.....was her reply".   It is from one of her very favorite books, Jane Eyer, by  Charlotte Bronte'.   On Friday she was quoting a few verses from that section of the book which speaks to the importance of doing what is right even when it is in the most difficult of times.  This, she was reminding those of us in the room, is when you can really understand the measure of a woman.   It is those hard times that it is so very important to continue to make the correct choices and care for yourself.   For Katie, she realizes that this is such a time.  She is tired and frankly frustrated that the little things that used to take so little energy,  now cause such exhaustion.    We invite you to help remind Katie, that indomitable is still her own continuing reply.

Just a reminder that Kate won't be able to see any visitors until 6 pm each weekday.  It frees up a bit more again over the weekend.  As the weekend gets closer we will post her therapy times and when she is good to go for visitors.    Thanks for your understanding and for all your positive thoughts and sincere prayers.
